TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

Clothing

Most of the portraits are head, head and shoulder, or from the waist up.  Occasionally, we will do a full body pose.  Solid colors will photograph best, particularly medium and dark tones as well as black, (Always a classy color). Vivid solid colors add a lot of impact as well.  AVOID STRIPES, PLAIDS, PRINTS, any LOGO, or WRITING.  Unless your skin is a medium or dark tone, bright colors will tend to take away from your face. Your face is the most important part of the photograph.  SOLIDS   PHOTOGRAPH MUCH BETTER!!  You can bring many different wardrobes.  You should bring a variety of styles and colors. Bring your clothing on hangars so you don’t have to worry about wrinkling them or where to put them.  Remember to create the look you want, you want to feel natural, be comfortable and just have fun.

Hair

Avoid cutting or changing your hairstyle right before your session.  It usually takes a day or so to look and feel natural.  Quick hairstyle changes during your session are o.k. and at times necessary, but they should be short.  Bring your hair care tools and products with you - don’t forget a mirror.  Although the photographer tries to help with hair, it is hard to know what your hair "is supposed to look like".  So make sure you like the look.  Hair style is ultimately YOUR responsibility.

Jewelry

It is usually best to keep it minimal and SIMPLE IS BEST.  You want the attention on you! Big, shiny jewelry can be distracting.

Props

BRING THEM!!  Bring props that make a statement or that help define who you are.  Some popular choices are sports equipment (balls, bats, sticks gloves etc), sports uniforms, musical instruments and vehicles.

Glasses

Most glasses glare, some prescriptions more than others.  Your best bet is to purchase a cheap pair of sunglasses with frames similar to yours and simply pop out the glass or you can check with your optometrist.  Most will "loan" you an empty set of frames similar to yours for your photo session.

Sun & Tanning

Sunburn and peeling skin DO NOT photograph well!!  Evenly tanned skin photographs well but beware of tan lines from bathing suits, sunglasses, wristwatches and jewelry.

Complexion

We retouch minor blemishes, so don't worry about minor breakouts.  As an option, severe acne can also be retouched so don’t worry, you’ll look great.

Makeup

Cover any blemishes with a base makeup and keep it simple.  AVOID DARK COLORS, especially around the eyes and on your cheeks!  Film has the tendency to enhance colors.  Keep colors light and pastel.  AVOID GLOSSY LIPSTICK!  It will reflect light and create white spots where your lips are supposed to be!  DON’T USE LOTION WITH SPARKLES - it can also create white spots on your skin.

Tattoos, Scars & Braces

Tattoos: to show or not to show...Its up to you!  Scars and tattoos are not automatically retouched, but as an option, can be removed at your request.  Braces?  Don't worry, but don't fight smiling, a braces smile is better than a dorkey, holding back kind of smile.  As an option braces can easily be removed.

Friends & Parents

Friends or parents are welcome. They can be of help.  HOWEVER, if they distract you, it is best to have them wait elsewhere. You can take a couple of shots with a boyfriend, girlfriend, best friend or sibling at no extra charge.

CONCERNS FOR WOMEN

Clothing Styles

Be careful of baggy clothes that might make you look larger than you are. Make sure your clothing flatters you. If you think you have large arms, be careful of sleeveless styles, they can make your arms look fuller. If you think your neck is long don’t wear wide or v-neck style shirts or blouses. We don't tell you what you can and can not wear. These are your portraits you wear what you want to wear. What one person likes may not be appropriate for the next. As long as it is rated PG, we don't care.

Undergarments

Please bring appropriate foundation wear for each outfit.  Flesh colored is the best you can hope for with light clothing or black

with dark clothing. If your blouse is sleeveless or has spaghetti strings consider bringing a strapless bra.  Tucking the straps down usually shows, looks bad and is time consuming.

Nail Polish

FINGER & TOE NAILS NAILS SHOW!  If they have polish that is chipped off, it will show. Many casual shots are done barefoot, so don't forget about those toes! Avoid real bright or dark colors. Natural or French tipped work best. You don't want to draw attention to your fluorescent yellow finger or toe nails and they may look really bad with your other wardrobes

CONCERNS FOR MEN

Clothing

White T-Shirts as undergarments are not recommended. They become a distraction in the photograph if they show up in the neck or arms under your shirt.

Shaving

Please make sure you are clean shaven. Retouching stubble costs extra and still does not look as good as a clean shave.

CONCERNS FOR COUPLES

In addition to all of the above couples usually photograph better if they dress the same or similar. The same style pants, or jeans with a blouse and shirt that is the same color or maybe a shade or two different.  This will make the two of you look as one with each other.

CONCERNS FOR FAMILIES

Like couples, families will also photograph better if dressed similar and color coordinated.  Everyone should have the same style pants, shorts, or jeans and shirts and blouses that define your role in the family.  Example: The parents could have dark colored tops with the children in lighter colors. Better yet, everyone could be dressed the same!
